It’s transformative, deeply meaningful, and (in my opinion) the best job in the world.
And yet… so many incredible doulas and midwives struggle to make their business work.
They burn out, they give up, or they keep it as a “side passion” because they can’t seem to make it financially sustainable.
And here’s the thing, it’s not because they’re not talented, passionate, or gifted at doing this ancient sacred women's work.
The #1 reason birth workers fail at business is not having a business mindset (or skills).
Yes, business skills matter, but really the one thing that will make you fail at business is your mindset.
Most birth workers aren’t failing because they don’t know enough about their craft or aren't amazing at what they do.
They’re failing because their own inner world is stopping them from showing up fully in the world.
I used to be one, so I know.
I half assed it for sooo many years, just making ends meet and feeling financial stress about if I'd make enough that month or the coming.
So scared to fully commit to my business, fearing judgment from other birth workers thinking who is she to do this, that and the other, failure to be successful and also fear of actually being successful and being even more seen.
Gah the horror.
For so many, (myself included) it looks like this:
Inner critic constantly whispering, "You’re not good enough."
Self-doubt and fear of being judged.
Imposter syndrome, "Who am I to call myself an expert?"
The witch wound, fear of persecution or being shamed for your power.
The sisterhood wound, fear of comparison or rejection from other women in the field.
Fear of failure if they go all in.
Fear of success if they go all in.
So they keep small (been there).
They hide (done that).
They tell themselves:
“I don’t like social media.”
“I’m not a tech person.”
“I don’t want to be online.”
But underneath those excuses is something deeper:
“What if people think I’m not good enough?”
“What if I fail in public?”
“What if I’m not as good as her?”
The doulas and midwives who succeed aren’t necessarily more talented, they’re just the ones who dare to be seen.
But here’s the truth: it’s not easy to put yourself out there.
Truth be told it still isn't for me either.
I still battle all of the above.
The voice however is quieter now and I've learnt skills to overcome, move through and show up anyways through the doubt and fears and the inner critics warnings.
I'm doing the inner work every day.
And through that I expand what I dare to do, show up as and hold.
Both financially, in my community and on my social media.
That’s why the inner work is non-negotiable.
You have to:
Face the self liming beliefs that are keeping you small.
Meet the fear of being visible and through strategies that work for you show up anyways.
Rewire your relationship with money, value, and success.
When you do, your confidence grows, your energy shifts, and you naturally start attracting the clients who are aligned with your values and your worth.
