Episode 2: Answering the Call to Midwifery – From Home Birth's in Byron Bay to Creating Natural Birth Education Online
In this episode, I share the story of how I felt the undeniable calling to midwifery after years of holding women’s circles and facilitating sacred feminine work. It felt like the natural next step, to walk beside women through the rite of passage from maiden to mother, to hold space for the ceremony of pregnancy, birth, and postpartum, and to sit at the threshold of the birth portal.
Living in Byron Bay, surrounded by a strong home birth and birth center culture, I began my midwifery studies and spent three years alongside home birth midwives, birth center midwives, and within the hospital system. From the very first week, I knew I would never work within the system. Yet, I endured four years of witnessing our broken maternity system causing 1 in 3 women birth trauma and the deep wounds it leaves on birthing women. After my graduate year, I resigned from the hospital, carrying with me the sacred rage that would fuel my next creation.
In my brother’s kitchen, I birthed The Natural Birth Course—an online childbirth education program designed to truly prepare women for birth as a rite of passage and the possibility of a natural birth in any birth setting. This was the beginning of my online journey, where I also launched The Natural Birth Podcast, The Nourishing Postpartum Course, and The Village—an online community for maidens, mothers, and magas.
I continued to attend home births and holding women’s work, my online offerings stayed small and as a side thing, until the day came when life called me back to my homeland of Sweden after many years in Australia and a whole new chapter opened up.
